A slow laptop is one of those things that can really affect your productivity and make using your machine stressful and frustrating. That’s why it’s so important to get to the bottom of this tech issue and restore your peace of mind.

So where do you start? Let’s explore some of the reasons why your PC laptop might be slow so that you can begin investigating.

Your hard drive is dying

Hard drives have a lifespan and eventually the parts wear down and need replacing – generally after about 2-3 years of consistent use. If your laptop is frequently freezing, making strange sounds or giving you a blue screen of death, these could be signs of a failing hard drive. By simply upgrading your hard drive to an SSD (solid-state drive), which doesn’t experience the same type of wear and tear, you could enjoy 8-10 years of hard drive drama-free life with greatly improved speed.

You’re running low on memory

To discuss your RAM requirements and sort out your upgrade, consult a PC tech support specialist If you’re working off an older laptop, you should consider whether you might be lacking in RAM (random access memory) to run programs. Your computer uses RAM to access data on the hard drive and the more RAM it has, the faster it can access the data. If the file is too big for the amount of RAM available, your laptop may slow down or freeze. It’s a good idea to

You have too many programmes running

One of the most common reasons for a slow computer is too many background programs running. Your RAM is only capable of running and switching between a certain amount of programmes at once, so if there are too many on the go, eventually you are going to lose processing power. Go to your Task Manager and take a look at what programmes are open, then close any that might be running in the background and/ or remove any that you don’t need.

If you want to fix your slow laptop once and for all and find a solution for any other computer tech issues, you can  reach out to one of our trained IT support professionals at Supportwave and get on-demand support remotely or in person.
